Saul Singer, the Co-Author of Start-Up Nation: The Story of Israel’s Economic Miracle, will share his knowledge and expertise on the educational and cultural practices that create innovators -- which is more crucial than ever as we move into the ‘4th industrial revolution’ and experience the increasing influence of exponential technologies and artificial intelligence. Saul will challenge you to reflect on what we are doing to prepare students and lifelong learners for this world, setting the stage for us to explore BOLD themes.

Through a series of short ‘TED-style’ talks, BOLD leaders and innovators will share their cutting-edge approaches to learning. Glean ideas, best practices, and inspiration for your own organization. Identify interesting opportunities for partnership.

Increasingly, higher education is evolving to meet the demands of the market, but even modern workplaces struggle to constantly keep up in this high-speed world. Where is it all heading and how can we prepare for it? In this session, you’ll hear about the future of higher ed and the workplace while also having a chance to work backward to the preparations young people need today to be ready for both.

We all know the old models aren't working anymore, but we struggle to find new learning approaches that can actually work. This session will introduce you to some new models you may not have heard about that will prompt you to reimagine education-as-usual.

Why is it that certain things get cheaper over time (relative to income)--food, technology, travel--but cost increases of quality education annually exceed inflation? This session will allow you to hear from people who are tackling different approaches to make quality education more affordable and will give you a chance to think about innovative approaches in your own sphere.

No matter how creative an educator/edu-preneur may be, he/she will still face headwinds from students, parents, teachers, and regulators who prefer "the way it used to be." In this session you will learn tips for changing perceptions and winning fans for your cause; you will also apply your insights through a collective exercise to challenge the status quo.

Hear from a panel of vibrant and talented ALU young leaders who experience innovation in learning every day. This session will end with a campus tour to highlight the types of spaces that support our model.

Grab some dinner and watch Most Likely to Succeed, a documentary about what education has looked like historically, and what it can (and needs to) look like for the world of tomorrow.

ALU leaders will set the stage for day 2 of B.O.L.D. You will hear about how we think about learning at ALU and how we ask leaders to choose missions for their lives instead of academic majors. What’s your mission?

Discuss the ideas and innovations from the ‘TED-style’ talks in smaller groups to talk about how these ideas are breaking ordinary dimensions and what lessons we can take away.

Continue your debates from the previous session over lunch, or spend this informal lunch however you prefer. You can spend some time shopping at the student-run Marketplace, organized by the Student Ventures Program. Outside of the Learning Commons (next to the plenary tent), our student entrepreneurs will be selling their own handmade crafts and advertising some of the services that they run both on and off campus.

Is the university degree dead? Should universities be for-profit or non-profit? Do you have a stance you want to share about either of these two questions? In this session, you will have the chance to debate BOLD questions like these with fellow leaders and innovators.

Finland is one of the most innovative countries in the world when it comes to learning. Pekka Peura, “the most famous teacher in Finland", has influenced thousands of teachers with his award-winning work. His efforts have encouraged teachers to join him in the long-term development of their own role as teachers. Pekka will share his experience in leading innovation in education, inspiring you to think about how it can be replicated globally.

This evening will provide a final opportunity for you to build your connections and make new ones. Enjoy energizing performances from ALU artists and musicians. Celebrate the learnings from the past two days and build excitement for the journey ahead.
